About FBS

Freshwater Benthic Services, Inc. (FBS) began offering invertebrate taxonomic services in 1986.  Michael Winnell is the Owner, President, Invertebrate Taxonomist, Secretary, and Janitor for the business, and just a plain old happy guy when looking at things without backbones.

From 1973 through 1986, Michael Winnell was employed by the Great Lakes Research Division, Institute of Science and Technology, at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  While at the U of M, he was tutored in the taxonomy of Chironomidae and Oligochaeta by Dr. Samuel Mozley for which he is grateful.  Following 13 years as the lead invertebrate taxonomist and lab supervisor for studies in the Great Lakes environment and authoring numerous papers and GLRD technical reports, FBS was initiated as a private consulting firm dedicated to the identification of invertebrates from a wide variety of aquatic environments.  Over 25 years of operation, FBS has provided identification for many federal and state agencies as well as for other consulting firms (see Work History), identified nearly 2.8 million invertebrates from more than 15,000 samples from all regions of the United States.

Samples contracted and received are handled in a professional manner with a mind to deadlines as FBS has never missed a deadline.  Identifications and counts are accurate and assured as Michael Winnell is a North American Benthological Society Certified Taxonomist:

  • Group 1: General Eastern Arthropoda
  • Group 2: Eastern Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera
  • Group 3: Eastern Chironomidae
